It was very well attended and it was great to see that a lot of ex-CTA staff as well as Chitue Surpa attended the talk and a lot them spoke in support of TNT la and were extremely grateful that TNT la was running for the post of Kalon Tripa as they felt that TNT la was the best person for the post of Kalon Tripa.
It was encouraging to see that a lot of Tibetans especially those who have worked in our Tibetan Government in Exile support TNT la as they understand how our TGIE works and in my opinion are best suited to understand the needs of our Exile Government.

After a quick lunch on the way from Deckyiling to Clement town, we arrived in Clement town around 2pm. The regional TWA and the TYC had organized for TNT la to meet with the Tibetans in Clement Town. It was attended by the local Tibetans as well as monks from the Local Monasteries.
It seems that Tibetans everywhere are taking a keen interest in our Democratic process and questions range from the Middle way policy to the the present policies of our government on economic, education, social and political policy. TNT la answered all the questions to everyone's satisfaction and after the Q & A, we went back to the hotel to rest for the day as we had to leave for Poanta Sahib the next morning with two stops along the way.Youth 4 TNThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03676154309331240312noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1591288564075720821.post-40588923539251985192011-02-05T08:40:00.000-08:002011-03-09T09:37:04.368-08:00RajpurWe reached Rajpur around 10 in morning after a five hour cab journey from Delhi. We stayed in a small hotel about a mile away from the centre of Rajpur and it had a great view of the whole valley. A TNT Supporter, Tsethang Dawa la from Rajpur had arranged the accommodations as well as arranging for TNT la to meet the Tibetans living in Rajpur.

(Tsethang Dawa la introducing TNT la)

Another thing that I learned about Rajpur was that in the early 1960, it could have been the residence of His Holiness the Dalai Lama as well the Tibetan Government in Exile. This was something that I had no idea about before. It just got me thinking about what could have been. Presently Rajpur is about 20 minutes away from Dehradun which is the capital of Uttrakhand. At the same time, it is about a 5 hour drive from Delhi and the roads are really good. From what I saw of the place and what I heard about the weather and all, it seemed like a huge loss. I still love Dharamsala for what it symbolizes but at the same time, Rajpur could have been Dharamsala. Just a random thought.
(TNT la in Rajpur)

TNT la met the Tibetans living in Rajpur at the local hall of the Nyamle at 2pm. Though the Tibetan Population is pretty small in Rajpur, it was great to see a packed hall. TNT la stressed on the fact that even though only about 100,000 Tibetans are voting for the Kalon Tripa and Chitue Elections, we must keep it in our mind that we are representing 6 million Tibetans and we have an added responsibility to vote for those who cannot. A young lady after the end of the session spoke about how she felt about TNT la after watching the Documentary Life in Exile and how she had no idea before seeing the video how much TNT la had contributed to the Tibetan Community.
After a two hour session, the local representative invited TNT la for tea. As I mentioned earlier in my Blogs, it was amazing to see how dedicated TNT supporters are and whenever the question of why they support TNT came up in our conversations, the answers that I got were that though they don’t know TNT personally but they know how much he has contributed to our cause and they are supporting him as they know that he is the right candidate for the Kalon Tripa.

The Delhi based supporters had organized a meeting with the Tibetan sweater sellers in Gurgaon. Gurgaon has less than 100 Tibetan sweater selling shops and is nearby to one of the biggest malls in India but it seems that we Tibetans have made a niche for ourselves in this business as Tibetans usually do pretty well during the annual winter sweater selling season though it does depend on the weather. This year, almost everyone had done well since winter was colder than usual.

(TNT la at Gurgaon Sweater Market)

The Tibetans in Gurgaon had hired a small hall adjacent to the market and at least one member from each family attended the talks. I think it was a great opportunity for TNT la as well as the Tibetans in Gurgaon to share their thoughts on the Kalon Tripa as well as their livelihoods. When asked a question about TNT la’s thoughts on the sweater selling business, I think almost everyone was amazed at the depth of knowledge TNT la had about it. He spoke about the fact that he knew that Tibetans were thinking about fire insurance but also understood that it was not as easy as it sounds. He spoke about finding a solution using public funds which can be generated by the Tibetan Sweater Sellers and maintained by the Tibetan Government in Exile so that the payouts will not be a hassle.
(TNT la's Talk and Q & A with Tibetans in Gurgaon)

Towards the end of the session, a young Tibetan said a few words in support that he voted for someone else during the preliminary but will be voting for TNT la after he did a lot of research.

After a two hour session, we went back to the hotel as we had to leave early in the morning for Jaipur. We left Delhi for Jaipur at 5 in the morning. It was about a five hour drive to Jaipur.
(Tibetans welcome TNT la to Jaipur)

The Tibetans in Jaipur had arranged for a hotel for TNT la to rest but because of the 5 hour journey which we thought would take about 4 hours, TNT la actually had no time to rest apart from having a cup of tea and we went straight to the Tibetan Market in Jaipur.
(TNT la at Jaipur Tibetan Market)

The head of the Tibetan Sweater Sellers Association introduced TNT la and at the same time spoke about the Jaipur Sweater Market. It was interesting to know that Jaipur is the one of the oldest Tibetan Sweater Market and also at the same time, it is one of largest Markets consisting of more than 200 shops.

It is also very interesting to find out about the rules and regulations followed by the Tibetan Sweater Sellers and how successful this winter business is. She also spoke about how the Tibetan Sweater Sellers take care of one another whenever there is a disaster such as fire.

TNT la spoke about the importance of the Kalon Tripa Elections and also about the Chitue Elections. He spoke about the need for each one of us to research, analyze and then make up your own decisions so that when we finally vote, we can be proud of who we vote for. He spoke about the fact that when we vote for anyone whether it is for the Kalon Tripa or the Chitue elections, if we have voted after researching thoroughly, we can be proud of the decisions that we have made.
(The kids really wanted a picture with TNT la)

TNT la also spoke about fire insurance and how we can bring it about together and it was appreciated by the Tibetans because of the clarity of this idea and how much it can actually help the Tibetan Sweater Sellers.

The Local Sweater Sellers Association invited TNT la and the support group from Delhi who had accompanied TNT la on this trip for lunch.

After lunch, we had to go back to Delhi as a talk by TNT la was organized at the Tibetan Youth Hostel in Delhi for 8pm. We left Jaipur around 3pm and were hopeful of reaching the youth hostel before 8pm. Unfortunately, due to the heavy traffic on the highway as well as inside Delhi, when we finally reached the Tibetan Youth Hostel, it was 10pm.

Thankfully, Dhargyal la, a TNT supporter from Delhi was able to screen a couple of videos of TNT la made by his supporters and also screen the Talk show produced by Tashi Wangchuk la, Tea with Tethong. These videos gave the students an added insight into TNT la and his achievements.
(TNT la with the Students at Tibetan Youth Hostel, Delhi)

It was great to see that the Tibetans Students were still eagerly waiting for TNT la to arrive. Even after waiting for two hours, there was a barrage of questions for TNT la and the Director had to intervene after an hour of Q & A session as it was getting really late and the students had college the next day. The questions were well-thought out and TNT la answered each and every question straightforward and clearly and spoke his mind without trying to please everyone.

This made me respect him even more. In my opinion, it is lot easier to say what everyone wants to hear but to say what you think is right even though some might not agree with it takes real integrity.
(TNT la at TWA Debate)

The TWA debate was held on the 31st of January at 10’o clock and attended by around 150 select invitees. The format of the Debate was different from the earlier debates as the questioners had to represent the organizations that they belonged to and at the same time the same question was asked to each of the candidates turn by turn. Another interesting concept was that each questioner had the opportunity to ask a follow up question if he or she felt that their question was not answered.

The debate was going on when it hit a bump on the road, the lights went out and the guy who has the keys to the generator room couldn’t be found. So after an hour and a half had gone by, there was in interval for about an hour till the lights came back. Since the entire session was about four hours, I think almost everyone welcomed the break.
TNT la spoke to the core group of volunteers about the Kalon Tripa election and at the same time thanking everyone for their support and hard work.
After a quick lunch at Sarah, TNT la had a meeting with all his supporters in Dharamsala at 2pm in Mcloed Ganj. While meeting the supporters, TNT la spoke about his experience while visiting the various settlements around India and about the support he had received in all these areas. Also at the same time, the supporters spoke about why they are supporting him and also spoke their feelings about why they felt TNT la was the right candidate for the Kalon Tripa. After a two hour session, the supporters donated to the efforts undertaken by the Youth for TNT during this campaign.
(Trisur Sonam Topgyal la introducing TNT la)

At 6:30pm Youth for TNT organized a discussion between the Tibetans living in and around Norbulingka at Dolmaling Nunnery. TNT la was introduced by Trisur Sonam Topgal la who spoke about the work that they had done together and outlined his reasons for supporting TNT la at this crucial point in our history. The reason why he supports TNT la is not based on his personal viewpoints only but the fact that at this crucial juncture in our History, he believes that TNT la is the right candidate to serve under His Holiness.
(TNT la Speaking at Dolmaling Nunnery)

One of the questions was about TNT la’s experience as the head of the second delegation to Tibet in 1980. TNT la shared his personal experiences about the visit and it was a revealing moment for all of us there and a reminder that our ultimate goal is for the Tibetans inside Tibet. Even in the extreme cold of night and since the talk was held outside, it was great to see the huge turnout.
(TNT la having a traditional lunch on the way to Mainpat with Ugen Tenzin la and Jigme Jungney la)

It turned out to be more than an eighteen hour journey. We finally reached Mainpat sometime around 10 in the night. I don’t think I need to mention anything about how tiresome the whole journey was but it was interesting to see that Mainpat Tibetan Settlement is located on a small hill and the weather was much cooler compared to Orissa which was already pretty hot and we could imagine how hot it would be in the summer.

The Mainpat Phendeyling Tibetan Settlement consists of 7 Camps and each camp separated from one another by an average distance of 5 to 6 Km’s. So it was great to see a packed hall and I have to commend the work TCHRD is doing in regards to educating the Tibetan Public about Democracy.

Another nickname for Mainpat is that it is sometimes called the Switzerland of the settlements as during summer, it is beautiful with flowers blooming. Unluckily, we were not able to see that as we were there in the wrong season but we could see the beautiful landscape. It is an agricultural based settlement but at the same time, most of the Tibetans depend on their winter sweater selling business.
When TNT la was speaking to the Local Tibetans, I don’t know whether it was just my opinion but it was as if not a single word was lost. Everyone was listening to each and every word and when the questions came, TNT la answered each and everyone precisely and to their satisfaction.
Thankfully our train was late by only about two hours and we reached Behrampur around 10 am and reached the settlement around 2pm.

Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) had organized a public debate with the Kalon Tripa for all the three candidates in Orissa and Mainpat. The public debate in Orissa was from the 23rd to the 26th with TNT la meeting with the locals on the 26th of January.

Even though it was held on the 26th January which coincided with the India Republic Day celebration, it was extremely well attended and as you can see from the pictures, they were people outside the hall as well.
TNT la also visited Rigon Thupten Mindrolling monastery and was introduced to the Monastery by the Dungsey Gyetrul Jigme Rinpoche and another interesting aspect of the settlement is that Jigme Rinpoche is actively involved in various community projects in the settlement and supports the community in various ways.
So, it turned out to be a very hectic schedule and personally I am amazed at his youthful energy. Let me tell you why shortly.

We left Dibrugarh around8:30pm and reached Dimakpur around 1:30am in the morning and were received at the station officially by the parents association and TNT supporters in Dimakpur.

After about 3 hours of sleep, we left Dimakpur around 5 in the morning for Kohima as they had arranged for TNT la to speak in Kohima at 9 in the morning.

(On the way to Kohima with TNT supporters)

It was great to see the support TNT la has in this region and also the individual effort undertaken by the supporters. Even though, they have so many problems of their own especially from the underground.

(TNT la at Kohima)

The Tibetans in Nagaland face problems from the Underground organization to whom they have to pay taxes as well as from the government about the legality of them staying in Nagaland but what they cared most was about how important the Kalon Tripa post was and also about the status of our exile government.

It was great to find out that even though, they don't have a Tibetan school but the parents have pooled together their resources and hired a teacher to teach Tibetan to their kids each day after school. They shared their problems with TNT la as a part of their daily life but their request to TNT la was not about solving their problems but much more about what TNT la can do for the Tibetans in Exile as well as Tibetans inside Tibet.

After a really quick lunch, we left Kohima for Dimakpur where TNT la was scheduled to talk with the Tibetans in Dimakpur at 2:30pm. After a 5 hour drive to Dibrugarh from Miao and a 3 hour sleep, I was finding it extremely hard to keep up and what amazed me was the fact that TNT la was still looking fresh where as I couldn’t keep my eyes open during the drive from Dimakpur to Kohima and back.

(Tibetans in Dimakpur)

Even though, the population in Kohima and Dimakpur is not as much as some other areas but it was as if atleast one person from each family came to the meeting and the support shown to TNT la for the work that he has done for Tibet was amazing.

One of the key supporters in Dimakpur, Jampa la, an ex-NDPT board member jokingly told us that the arrangements that they had made for TNT la was exactly the same as for Professor Samdong Rinpoche la as one is the present Kalon Tripa and the other will be the next Kalon Tripa.

An interesting question was asked by a Tibetan in Dimakpur not to TNT la but to the audience. Have a look.
(TNT la visiting the primary school)

One thing about Miao that impressed me a lot was the fact that it had a lot of youngsters returning to their settlements either to teach or to work in the co-operative society (Nyamle). Not only that, the youngsters have started an adult education program so that the elders can at least read their prayers. It was really impressive to see the amount of dedication the youth have towards the community.
After the meeting with the local Tibetans, TNT la was able to visit the Nyamle and see what they were doing such as the local carpet industry and the other initiatives.

Another initiative which we saw in Miao was the Siddartha Home which is like a boarding hostel for the local children so that they are able to adjust easier when they will leave for different schools after 8th grade. It primarily aims to teach the students about life in a boarding school and the individual efforts needed to achieve success.
(A CST students asking TNT a question)

TNT la also had an opportunity to speak with the students from the local CST school which had grades up to the 8th standard and it was very surprising to see the students ask a couple of perceptive questions even though they were pretty young.
We left Miao around 2pm as we had to reach Dibrugarh around 8:30 for our train to Dimakpur.
Youth 4 TNThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03676154309331240312noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1591288564075720821.post-6791792439848376082011-01-21T02:00:00.000-08:002011-02-09T22:39:04.725-08:00Tezu
According to the earlier schedule, we were supposed to visit Miao first and then Tezu but we had to change it as the secretary of the Home Department was in Miao till the 21st. So we had to go to Tezu first and then Miao.

While planning the trip to Miao and Tezu, it was a bit of a hassle as everyone we asked had a different opinion on how long it will take to drive from Dibrugarh to Miao and Tezu. We originally thought that it would be about 4 hours but while contacting the local Tibetans, some said 7 hours, so it was very hard to get a definite travel time.

We reached Dibrugarh around 2 in the afternoon and after lunch we left for Tezu. Since we didn’t have a cell phone connection, the driver loaned us his phone for the journey and even though we now had a cell phone, but the cellular reception in Arunachal Pradesh is probably the worst in India and when we reached Tezu around 9pm in the night, trying to find the Tibetan Settlement was a nightmare as the phone just wouldn’t work and we couldn’t contact the local representatives.
As we all know, never ask for directions in India and no one will ever say that they don’t know but rather just point you to a direction. After a couple of events and knocking on some random doors, we finally reached the settlement office and were greeted by the local representatives.

We then found out why there are a lot of different views on the travel time. It seems that we can cross the river a traditional ferry which takes the car across the river and it saves about 2 hours of the total journey time. Since we had left Dibrugarh only around 3 and when we reached the banks of the river, the ferry had already closed for the day, so we had to go through the longer route which took us through the mountains.

The meeting with the Tibetans in the settlement was scheduled for the next day at 9 am in the morning. In the Tibetan Settlement in Tezu, a lot of questions were regarding the local CST School and the deteriorating standard of education. TNT la spoke about the fact that he believes that the Education is not something that doesn’t have a solution but something that we would need to work at and the responsibility to be shared between the parents and the CTA.

After a quick lunch, we had to leave Tezu as we planned to try to reach Miao as early as possible in the evening. While on the way to Miao, the driver took us through the shorter route which allowed us to have a firsthand experience of a ferry ride.

Watching a full busload of passengers being taken across the river in a traditional ferry was a huge surprise.
Since TNT la would not be able to go everywhere, some supporters were able to arrange so that representatives from Bomdilla, Tenzingang and Tawang had an opportunity to meet with Tenzin Namgyal Tethong la on the evening of the 19th in Guwahati.

Most of them had travelled for a day or two to be in Guwahati and TNT la thanked them for making it to Guwahati and spoke to them about the reasons why he was running for Kalon Tripa and the purpose of the whole campaign trail was so that Tibetans in Exile would be able to hear TNT la speak and at the same time, he would be able to answer their queries and most importantly, he would be able to hear their problems and if elected would have a much better understanding of the lives of Tibetans in various settlements.

Tephun Tenzin Shastri, Principal, Jhamtse Gatsal Children's Community, Tawang India spoke about why he is supporting TNT la and was very vocal about the fact that TNT la should speak more about his own achievements which have contributed a lot to the Tibetans and most of TNT la’s initiatives continue to serve the Tibetan People in a huge way.
Most of the representatives were shy in the beginning but after they got more comfortable, they shared their feelings with TNT la and all of us about their feelings. After a while, it was no longer about the campaign at all but just about listening to their stories.

When we talk about who the next Kalon Tripa should be, we talk about experience, vision and innovation. But in my personal opinion, experience, vision and innovation is important in its own rights but one thing that we Tibetans can’t compromise is on Integrity and I believe Tenzin Namgyal Tethong la is someone that has always lived his life with Integrity.

Since we were already at the airport and they had not been able to contact us, they were able to put us in a different flight which left Bagdora around 12:45 and we reached Guhati around 2pm.

The moment we reached Guhati, all our phone connections stopped working and we found out later that because of all the insurgency issues, Sim Cards bought in other regions of India will not work in the north eastern states of India. We had to borrow the cell-phone of the driver so that we could contact the organizers.

We reached Shillong around 6:30pm due to the heavy traffic and were received by Tashi la and Gompo la and other individual who had organized the meeting with the locals. We were put in a hotel right above the hall where TNT la was scheduled to speak the next morning.

Shillong had been experiencing some severe cold weather recently and when we were there, it was extremely cold with the temperature reaching the freezing point and on top of that, the hotel that we stayed in had marble floors to add to the cold. Though, the organizers arranged extra blankets, it was still extremely cold and I think for all of us, it was the coldest time that we have during the whole tour.

On the 19th, the individuals had organized a meeting with the local residents and we had the opportunity to show some video clips of TNT la such as the Support Video and the short biography of TNT la to the residents so that they were able to get a better idea about TNT la and the amount of contributions he has made to the Tibetan Community.
It was very encouraging to see two youngsters ask two very different questions in English. You can view both the videos below.

After the meeting, since we had some time, TNT la was able to visit the main market where a lot of local Tibetans have shops and most of the Tibetans seemed to be doing really well. The reason being most shoppers prefer buying from Tibetans as I guess we Tibetans have a sense of style??????

I have learned a lot while travelling with TNT la about all these Khador settlements and what their major concerns are. Even though they have their own concerns about their own well-being, education and other local concerns, but no matter where we were, their main concern was about His Holiness and how best to help the Tibetans inside Tibet.
Youth 4 TNThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03676154309331240312noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1591288564075720821.post-12203587800440828032011-01-18T09:00:00.000-08:002011-03-15T09:35:11.855-07:00ཤི་ལོང་།

I think it was premature of us to hope that this will be on Schedule. We were about to reach Jorthang, which is about 30 minutes away from Darjeeling when we were met with a huge traffic Jam.

(TNT la looking ahead as we got stuck in a traffic Jam)
(Not much snow on the road but its India)

It seems that it snowed during the night and as you can see from the pictures, not really that much of snow. But a lot of smaller cars were not able to move as it was slipping on the ice and as such, we were stuck at this point for another 2 hours and the possibility of making it for lunch was impossible. We just hoped that we would be able to make it for the meeting with the locals.

We finally got through the small patch of icy road and when we got into Darjeeling, we were faced with another Traffic Jam and we made to the hall only at 2:30pm. It was amazing to see the Tibetans who were there inspite of the fact that they only had today to do their shopping as the strike starts from the very next day for another 8 days.
(TNT la in Darjeeling)

When TNT la spoke to residents, he saw some familiar faces and he was unable to stop himself from becoming emotional as I think he has a lot of fond memories of his time in Darjeeling.

Gen Taso of Dhasa ChuShi-Gang-Truk spoke about the integrity of TNT la and shared his feelings about the baseless rumours directed against TNT la and the enormous contributions made by TNT la. You can see the video below.

After an early Dinner hosted by the locals, we had to make a move for Sailagura as the strike would start again from the 18th. At the same time, we were worried about the strike in Silliguri to protest against the strike by the Gorkhaland. Thankfully, the strike had ended at 6pm in Silliguri, so when we reached Silliguri at 8pm, we had no problems. And once again we became guests at Dorjee la’s and we had to impose on his hospitality.

We made it to Kalimpong just in time for the meeting with local Tibetans. It was straight to the Mani Hall the moment we arrived in Kalimpong. The people of Kalimpong have something that I think Tibetans in Exile can follow. We normally talk about unity but what they have is actual unity. They have about 10 different Kyidus and Tsokpas but they elect one individual to be the head of the organization and whatever they decide, they do it together after having discussions and debates. At the end of all the debates and discussions, they reach a consensus together and it has nothing to do with Cholka or Cholug which was very surprising and was like a breath of fresh air.

It was great to see the huge support TNT la has in Kalimpong and also at the same time Kalsang la had a great time in Kalimpong as he was visting his Childhood home after almost four decades. So it was a walk down memory lane for him.
We were put up in one of the oldest hotels in Kalimpong called Gompa’s Hotel and it has some history behind it. This hotel belongs to Sonam la, the grandson of a personal staff of the 13th Dalai Lama who had stayed behind when the 13th Dalai Lama visited India in the early 1900’s and had also produced a Tibetan – Hindi Dictionary and we saw the original copy of it which was in tatters but his grandson is trying to preserve it and he was able to find out more about his Grandfather through Tashi Tsering la of Amye Machen Institute.

We reached Ravangla around 9 am in the morning and the regional TYC had organized this event. Since it was on a Sunday, the number of people attending were less than Gangtok and the reason for this we were told is that there is a Sunday Market in Ravangla and the residents sell their vegetables and others on this day and this is one of their main source of revenues.
So, if the train was not delayed, we would have made it to Ravangla on the 14th and not on a Sunday. TNT la spoke about the importance of the Kalon Tripa Elections and how important it is for Tibetans to participate in it and spoke about his personal reasons for standing for the post of Kalon Tripa.
During the Q & A, one resident, a young woman became extremely emotional while talking about the Kalon Tripa election and how we need to take it seriously. Listen to her in the video below.
Since the Darjeeling and Kalimpong are on strike, the GJP has also blocked some parts of the Highway to Sikkim which passes through the Gorkhaland areas, so it was not safe to travel during the day through that highway. So we were not able to go to Ravangla on the 14th as planned and had to stay in Sailigura for the night. While on the Train, TNT la was able to contact Dorjee la, a very old acquaintance of his whom he had not seen in 35 years. And as such, we were able to find shelter as well as food for the night.
(TNT, Kelsang la and Dorjee at the site of the Kalachakra in Sailuguri)
Trying to find a car to go to Sikkim for the next morning was such a hurdle as most of the cabs in Silliguri had WB license plates and as such were too scared to travel on the highway to Sikkim for fear of random harassment. We did manage to find a car willing to drive us up there but it had to come all the way from Sikkim to do that.
We left Sailuguri around 8 in the morning and the driver told us that if we travel early in the morning, we should be fine without the Army Escort, so we took off on the highway towards Sikkim. The national highway which is the only link Sikkim has to the rest of India was almost empty and to add to the silence, it was full of early morning mist.
The journey itself was uneventful after all the suspense; just a couple of trees on the side of the highway which I think were earlier put on the highway to block traffic. So we reached Gangtok around 12 noon and TNT la was welcomed by the local heads of different groups.
(TNT la welcomed at the Denzong Regency by the people of Gangtok)
We were put in one of the most beautiful hotel in all of Gangtok, the Denzong Regency by a very old school friend of Tenzin Namgyal Tethong la. After lunch, the regional TYC chapter along with individual supporters had arranged a discussion with local people at 2pm.
(TNT la speaks at Cholkha Sum Hall in Gangtok)
As you can see through the pictures, it was very well attended considering the fact that we had to make so many changes to the dates and for this much number of people to actually attend was a huge boost for the campaign Trail. Lobsang Dorjee la of Gangtok had arranged for a projector and showed the VOA Kunleng Interview before the talk of TNT la and I believe that gave the attendees some information about TNT la’s experience and vision for the future.
The questions asked the people of Gangtok were very well thought out ranging from the present trends in the Education Policy to the future of the Dialogue between the representatives of His Holiness and the Chinese Government. A lot of questions were very well thought out and made me realize that Tibetans in Exile everywhere are taking a keen interest in the democratic process and participating in numbers.
(TNT la with N.K. Pradhan, Minister for Human Resource Development, Sikkim)
In the evening the friends of TNT, Gangtok arranged a Dinner reception where the Chief Guest was the Honourable Minister for Human Resource Development of the Government of Sikkim, N.K. Pradhan who was a school mate of TNT la and graced the occasion with his presence. Also present were all the heads of the organization such as TYC, TWA, Dotoe Cholka, Dome Cholka and Utsang Cholka and some other prominent local Sikkimese. This was a huge success as TNT la was able to talk to everyone present individually and since the occasion was informal, the local heads were able to know TNT la as a person too. The key organizer for this event was Kelsang Chokteng la of Science meets Dharma and was assited by Karma Youngyal la and Pema Lakar of Sikkim.
We have Mr. Kelsang who has been a close personal friend of TNT la for a long number of years and volunteered to accompany TNT la when he was making plans to visit the settlements.

Let me also introduce myself. My name is Lobsang Gyatso and I live in Dharamsala and work in the field of computer security and web development mostly as a freelancer. I am an alumnus of TCV School where my parents have worked for the last 30 odd years and continue to do. I am indeed grateful and honored to have the opportunity to travel with Tenzin Namgyal Tethong la and to be representing Youth for TNT.
The first part of the campaign trail would take Tenzin Namgyal Tethong la to Khador Gang Sum and we started our journey from Mughalsarai through the North East Express leaving MughalSarai at 6:30pm and arriving the next morning at 8:30 am.
The scheduling for the Tour to Khador Gang Sum was something like trying to piece together a jigsaw puzzle. The earlier schedule which has been planned weeks before was that 14th Darjeeling, 15th Kalimpong, 16th Ravangla and finally on the 17th Gangtok.
As people living in the area already know, the GJM called a strike from the 12th to the 15th in all Gorkhaland Areas. Read this news article for more information
http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/gjm-hails-srikrishna-report-77589
So the whole schedule had to be arranged and rearranged and much much more. Will write more in my next post in regards to this.
(TNT la and myself waiting on Platform 2 where as the train arrived on Platform 1)
As most of you who have had the pleasure to travel in North India in winter would probably know what I am talking about when I say nothing ever keeps to a schedule that you plan out for. And keeping to its tradition, the train that was supposed to arrive at 6:30pm arrived around 5 hours late at 11:45pm. And to top it all, it was supposed to arrive on platform 2 and at the very last moment, there was an announcement that the train was waiting on platform 1 and we almost missed our train after a 5 hour delay. At least we made it and now we are now on our way to Khador Gang Sum.Youth 4 TNThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03676154309331240312noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1591288564075720821.post-39326245567435552042011-01-11T05:22:00.000-08:002011-02-09T22:36:15.780-08:00Tenzin Namgyal Tethong la speaks at Varanasi

It was extremely cold in Varanasi but it was heartening to see around hundreds of people attending the concert. And for them to hear Tenzin Namgyal Tethong la speak about the importance of the concert and also at the same time about the importance of the upcoming Kalon Tripa and Chitue election and the responsibility each of us must take to vote for our candidate. He also spoke about the fact that even though only about 100,000 Tibetans in Exile are taking part in the process but we must always know that we are doing this not only for us but also for all the Tibetans inside Tibet.
Youth 4 TNThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03676154309331240312noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1591288564075720821.post-54727276475879529972011-01-10T11:09:00.000-08:002011-01-19T13:20:35.136-08:00Travel to Varanasi
<m:smallfrac m:val="off"> <m:dispdef> <m:lmargin m:val="0"> <m:rmargin m:val="0"> <m:defjc m:val="centerGroup"> <m:wrapindent m:val="1440"> <m:intlim m:val="subSup"> <m:narylim m:val="undOvr"> </m:narylim></m:intlim> </m:wrapindent> </m:defjc></m:rmargin></m:lmargin></m:dispdef></m:smallfrac>

I embarked on the historical journey to accompany Tenzin Namgyal Tethong la on his visit to the various settlements across India from Dharamsala on the 8th of January, 2011. Dharamsala had been getting colder and colder and I thought maybe Delhi would provide some relief but sadly it was colder in Delhi. Atleast in Dharamsala I was able to enjoy the sunlight during the day but in Delhi it was just foggy all around and recent news of trains getting delayed or even cancelled was another reason for me to worry. I was concerned about whether I would be able to make it to Varanasi on time to prepare for the concert.

The freedom concert has been going on in the Tibetan community for a while and when our team thought about doing a concert in Varanasi, we felt that youth for TNT could be a co-sponsor for their concert if they decide to a concert in Varanasi. This is how the idea for the concert came into being. Freedom concert, advocating rights for jailed Tibetan Artists Tashi Dhondup and Dhondup Wangchen is a solidarity movement by the Tibetan Artists in Exile for their fellow artists imprisoned inside Tibet.

While in Delhi, I had the opportunity to meet a number of TNT supporters and it was a source of immense encouragement to see so many dedicated supporters. And the individual efforts taken by the supporters in my opinion is a true testament of our Democracy.

While in Manjnu ka Tilla, I made a couple of calls to the Indian Railway Helpline at 139(so any of you travellers out there, use this number for train enquiry in Delhi, not sure whether it works in other parts of India) and surprise, surprise the train was on time. I guess there must be someone higher up there that is looking out for me. (Just some humour, didn’t mean to imply what the gods have decided for the upcoming Kalon Tripa).

Reached the station around 5:30pm and the train was scheduled for 6:30PM and what do you know? It didn’t arrive on time. Anyways, it came around 7:30pm and I was pleasantly surprised as I saw a Tibetan from Switzerland who had waited for the same train the day before and was kept waiting for about 12 hours only to be told that it was cancelled, so I felt lucky that it was only an hour late. It was not the case as the train stood on the platform for another 3 hours before it finally moved.

Arrived in Varanasi around 2 pm, a mere 5 hours late. After haggling with the taxi driver about the price, just part of the whole process, proceeded to Sarnath where I met Tenzin Gyalpo la AKA Michael who has been instrumental during the whole planning of the concert.

Had an informal meeting with him in regards to the concert and how youth for TNT can assist them during the concert. I have never really dwelt into the life of a Tibetan Musician and how they are able to survive in our exile community and this was my first insight into the life of an Exile artist.

I shared a room with all the artists from the concert on the evening of the 10th and I learnt a couple of things. One, the Tibetan artist I met namely Jhola Techung la, Michael la, Chodak la, Gompo la(Thukje Katrin Fame) and the others is that music might be their passion but at the same time, they believe strongly that what they do plays an important part in maintaining the culture of Tibet.

The conversation shifted between various forms of music and some Jam sessions (I wish I had taken some short clips of that but I couldn’t bring myself to impose on their Hospitality.) and mostly about how pirated copies are the bane of their existence.

I was surprised to find out that it is not an easy life as they have to make a living based solely on their art and since we are a really small population in exile, it is an uphill battle. And with such rampant piracy of CD’s in our community, maybe we can take a step towards preserving our culture for our future generations.

So, my request to all you fellow Tibetans is that if you like the music, buy the original CD of the artists. It does go a long way in preserving our culture.
