Darjeeling

We left for Darjeeling around 9:30am on the 17th and we had more than ample time to reach Darjeeling for a lunch hosted by the local representatives at around 12:30pm and the meeting with locals had been setup for 2:00pm.
I think it was premature of us to hope that this will be on Schedule. We were about to reach Jorthang, which is about 30 minutes away from Darjeeling when we were met with a huge traffic Jam.

It seems that it snowed during the night and as you can see from the pictures, not really that much of snow. But a lot of smaller cars were not able to move as it was slipping on the ice and as such, we were stuck at this point for another 2 hours and the possibility of making it for lunch was impossible. We just hoped that we would be able to make it for the meeting with the locals.

We finally got through the small patch of icy road and when we got into Darjeeling, we were faced with another Traffic Jam and we made to the hall only at 2:30pm. It was amazing to see the Tibetans who were there inspite of the fact that they only had today to do their shopping as the strike starts from the very next day for another 8 days.

When TNT la spoke to residents, he saw some familiar faces and he was unable to stop himself from becoming emotional as I think he has a lot of fond memories of his time in Darjeeling.

After an early Dinner hosted by the locals, we had to make a move for Sailagura as the strike would start again from the 18th. At the same time, we were worried about the strike in Silliguri to protest against the strike by the Gorkhaland. Thankfully, the strike had ended at 6pm in Silliguri, so when we reached Silliguri at 8pm, we had no problems. And once again we became guests at Dorjee la’s and we had to impose on his hospitality.

Kalimpong

It was like trying to find our way through a maze, this whole Khador Gang Sum Tour. The only two free days were the 16th and the 17th and we had to make sure that we don’t get stuck as the strike restarts on the 18th and from there the strike will continue for another 8 days.

We made it to Kalimpong just in time for the meeting with local Tibetans. It was straight to the Mani Hall the moment we arrived in Kalimpong. The people of Kalimpong have something that I think Tibetans in Exile can follow. We normally talk about unity but what they have is actual unity. They have about 10 different Kyidus and Tsokpas but they elect one individual to be the head of the organization and whatever they decide, they do it together after having discussions and debates. At the end of all the debates and discussions, they reach a consensus together and it has nothing to do with Cholka or Cholug which was very surprising and was like a breath of fresh air.

It was great to see the huge support TNT la has in Kalimpong and also at the same time Kalsang la had a great time in Kalimpong as he was visting his Childhood home after almost four decades. So it was a walk down memory lane for him.
We were put up in one of the oldest hotels in Kalimpong called Gompa’s Hotel and it has some history behind it. This hotel belongs to Sonam la, the grandson of a personal staff of the 13th Dalai Lama who had stayed behind when the 13th Dalai Lama visited India in the early 1900’s and had also produced a Tibetan – Hindi Dictionary and we saw the original copy of it which was in tatters but his grandson is trying to preserve it and he was able to find out more about his Grandfather through Tashi Tsering la of Amye Machen Institute.

The grandson invited all of us to breakfast and narrated to us his family history and turned the breakfast into a history lesson.

Ravangla

The original plan was for Tenzin Namgyal Tethong la to visit Ravangla on the 14th, but because of train delays on the 14th, we were not able to make that schedule. So we had to get up around 5 in the morning and leave for Ravangla.

We reached Ravangla around 9 am in the morning and the regional TYC had organized this event. Since it was on a Sunday, the number of people attending were less than Gangtok and the reason for this we were told is that there is a Sunday Market in Ravangla and the residents sell their vegetables and others on this day and this is one of their main source of revenues.

So, if the train was not delayed, we would have made it to Ravangla on the 14th and not on a Sunday. TNT la spoke about the importance of the Kalon Tripa Elections and how important it is for Tibetans to participate in it and spoke about his personal reasons for standing for the post of Kalon Tripa.
